SANE Australia - Peer Support
SANE Australia is a national mental health charity that offers 24-hour access to an online community of forums for individuals, and their family and friends, to share and connect with peers in a safe place. Peer support services are aimed at connecting you with someone who really gets it. SANE's peer support services are for anyone dealing with mental health concerns as well as family, friends, and carers.
SANE Australia is working to support four million Australians affected by complex mental illness including schizophrenia, bipolar, personality disorders, eating disorders, OCD, post-traumatic stress disorder, severe depression and anxiety.
SANE provides a range of peer support services:
Online forums provide a place for individuals and peers with similar lived experiences to share and connect with each other in a safe place. Forums are moderated by trained mental health professionals.
The Lived Experience Forum is for people living with mental illness, and is generally used for sharing stories and opinions. Common topics include:
- Challenges raised by symptoms
- Issues related to assessment, treatment and medications
- Impact of mental illness on relationships
The Friends, Family & Carers Forum is often used for seeking information and advice. Common topics include:
- Practical challenges of being a carer
- Difficulties of navigating the mental health system
- The challenge of someone being unwell and refusing treatment
Eligibility Criteria
The service is available for individuals affected by complex mental health issues, and their friends, families, and carers.
