Mental Health Foundation Australia - Support Groups
Mental Health Foundation Australia (MHFA) runs various support groups for people who are caring for someone with complex mental health issues to share, listen, and offer advice to people's experiences who 'get it'.
MHFA is an organisation made up of people from all walks of life. It includes professionals, those living with mental illness, families of those living with mental illness, mental health related organisations and members of the public with an interest in mental health.
The Parents and Carer’s Support Group are run online and at the MHFA site. The forums are a friendly place
where parents, carer’s and guardians of children or people with a mental
illness or related conditions can come meet, chat, share advice and
support each other through care-giving responsibilities. In this group,
participants can open up about their own wellbeing, realise they are not
alone, address past unresolved issues, set new goals, learn new skills
and take charge of their lives in a supportive environment of
like-minded people.
The support groups allow members to exchange new methods, skills, and strategies to cope with current challenges. Interaction within a structured group is particularly useful for group members to learn self-care. They can become more communicative and learn how to assert themselves by knowing their rights. Most of all, a support group can help someone with a mental health issue to learn which behaviours are acceptable and which are not.
