NEXUS Dual Diagnosis- Secondary Consultation
The Nexus Dual Diagnosis Consultation Service provides organisational and workforce development support for services and individuals who are presenting with comorbid alcohol and/or substance use and mental ill-health.
Nexus was established in 2002 as part of the Victorian Dual Diagnosis Initiative (VDDI). The brief of the
initiative was one of capacity building and more specifically, to enhance the capacity of Clinical Mental Health Services, Alcohol & Other Drug (AOD) Services and Psychiatric Disability Rehabilitation and Support Services (PDRSS) to work more effectively with individuals presenting with comorbid substance use and mental health issues (Dual Diagnosis).
Nexus is not a direct clinical service provider. Nexus supports integrated alcohol and other drugs and mental health treatment through service development, education and clinical leadership.
The prevalence and complexity of dual
diagnosis requires an integrated approach to treatment delivered as
‘core business’ within specialist mental health and drug and alcohol
services. By working with organisations across
Public Mental Health, Alcohol & Other Drugs, and Mental Health Community Support Services, Nexus aim to ensure that people of all ages are not excluded from a service. Their needs will be addressed within the most
appropriate service setting by suitably trained staff and treatment and
care that they receive is of high quality.
