St. Vincent's Aboriginal Mental Health Inpatient Service
St Vincent’s Aboriginal Health Unit has specialist inpatient mental health facilities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to access culturally appropriate care.
St Vincent’s Mental Health Acute Inpatient Service has five specialist beds that are managed with the Victorian Aboriginal Health Service Family Counselling Service for Aboriginal people from across Victoria. In order to provide greater access and continually improve its services to the Aboriginal community, St Vincent’s established a dedicated Aboriginal Health Unit at the end of 2015.
Aboriginal Victorians are able to access culturally appropriate mental health support and services, which are integral to Koolin Balit, the Victorian Government’s ten-year strategy to improve the length and quality of the lives of Aboriginal people in Victoria.
The key factor in St Vincent’s approach to ensuring good Aboriginal health outcomes is the Koori mental health liaison officers (KMHLOs). KMHLOs aim to improve access and the cultural appropriateness of services provided to Aboriginal people.
